  • How to paint a garden bench

    • Giving your garden bench a makeover is easy, you just need to properly prepare it and buy the right paint.

      -   If it’s been painted before, make sure you remove as much of the existing paint as you can.

      -   Smooth the surface with sandpaper.

      -   Wipe away any dirt or dust fragments with a wet cloth and let it thoroughly dry, preferably indoors away from moist air.

      -   For wooden benches, consider adding a primer for a smoother final finish if the wood hasn’t been pre-treated.

      -   Paint with a good quality wood or rust-resistant metal paint.

      -   Once dry, you could add an optional weather-proof sealant for longevity.

TOP TIP: Remember to mix your paint before use and go with the wood grain.

  • Where to put a garden bench

    • Garden benches are a classic addition to any garden and offer a really nice opportunity for alternative viewpoints to your space. Have you got a plant or collection in your garden that you love to look at? Consider placing a bench near there to enjoy it.

      Before you do:

      1. Look at the location. Is it in full sun and is there protection nearby?

      2. Then you need to find a bench that fits in with your garden style – wood to blend in with nature, sturdy metal for more modern gardens or high ornamental for something architecturally interesting.

      3. Finally make sure the ground is level and that there is enough space for it.

  • What’s the best wood for a garden bench?

    • Teak is ideal for outdoor furniture. It’s durable waterproof, sun-resistant, pretty and survives even the worst weather.

Oak is another good choice. It’s strong, but need more maintenance thank others due to the reduced water and sun resistance. p>

Cedar or Pine will age and turn a greyish colour unless they’re treated, in which case they’ll last years.

Redwood is a great option too. It’s resilient, touch, and resistant to decay and insects too. Not to mention the attractive colour and grain.
